Have you ever heard of the “when in doubt, go monochrome” rule? It comes in clutch for anyone who has trouble deciding what to wear in the morning; choosing one color for your outfit helps to avoid any decision fatigue. When it works, it works well — and it seems that Hollywood darling Reese Witherspoon is a big fan of this classic color rule.

Witherspoon (who has definitely drawn curiosity around her gorgeous interiors before) took to Instagram to share a video with her friend and fellow A-list actress Jennifer Garner. In the video snippet, Witherspoon is seated in a cozy corner of her home in a blue velvet wingback chair, nestled next to a side table that is the exact same shade of blue.

Paired with the lighter blue wall trim and cool-toned wallpaper, this blue-on-blue space looks so put-together. It’s so simple and yet so effective.

How to Recreate Witherspoon’s Look in Your Home

The best thing about monochrome styling is that you barely have to put any thought into it. If you’re a fan of neutral aesthetics, you can choose your favorite beige, brown, or cream shade to carry through a space.

Or, if you’re like Witherspoon and like a pop of color, find a hue that speaks to you and then begin the hunt for that shade wherever you go. If it’s already a favorite color, you likely already have a bunch of accessories that fit the bill!

The more unique your chosen color, the more difficult it might be to stick to a monochromatic scheme, but rules are meant to be broken. Like Witherspoon did with her various shades of periwinkle blue in this corner, you can experiment with different hues within your chosen palette. Monochrome palettes are an awesome jumping-off point when you just don’t know where to start.

“Matchy-matchy” decor can indeed look so chic when you lean into a monochromatic scheme. Take a page from Witherspoon’s design book and match your chair to your side table to make styling easy while making a statement at the same time.
