I Put a Side Table in My Bathroom Two Years Ago, and I’ll Never Move It

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from living in a small apartment is that the perfect piece of furniture might already be sitting right under your nose — just in the wrong room. My favorite repurposed piece so far that fits this description? A petite lucite side table that now lives in my bathroom.

When I first bought it, the table was perfect in my living room. It was small, sleek, and just transparent enough to make the space feel airier. It sat beside my sofa and added a subtle bit of polish to my tiny space by holding a small stack of coasters and a bud vase. But when a new desk arrived, the lucite table got evicted because I no longer had the room for it.

Too pretty to part with, the table began moving around my apartment. I tried the entryway, but it was too tight. I tried it as a nightstand but really needed storage, which this tiny table lacks. Back by the sofa? Nope; still no space. I was about to give up when I looked toward my bathroom, a space I describe as “charming, if you squint.”

Why I Put a Side Table in My Bathroom

It’s not a big bathroom, and the corner across from the toilet has always been tricky. It’s home to a not-so-cute exposed steam pipe that draws the eye for all the wrong reasons. Another flaw? There’s not really anywhere to set anything down — no surface for a candle or a book — not even a ledge by the tub.

I moved the table into the bathroom on a whim, and instantly, the room felt different. The clear acrylic material kept the space feeling open and light (a must in a small bathroom), but the shape added structure and a bit of unexpected sophistication.

I styled the table simply with just a few favorite magazines or books, a candle, and sometimes a tiny potted plant. Suddenly, what had been a purely utilitarian space felt intentional. Even the not-so-pretty steam pipe seemed less noticeable because it’s visually balanced by something lovely nearby.

Two years later, the table is still there, thriving. It added storage, style, and just enough polish to make me forget my bathroom doesn’t have a window. More importantly, it reminded me that a good piece doesn’t need the perfect spot. Sometimes it just needs a second chance in a new room.
