9 Stores Like JOANN Where You Can Still Shop for Fabric, Craft Supplies, and More
JOANN has always been one of the best places to shop for seasonal home decor, as well as supplies for DIY home projects and cozy hobbies like knitting, crocheting, and embroidering. If you’re mourning the loss of this craft retailer like I am, you may be wondering where to shop once the chain officially closes all of its locations.
Luckily many other craft stores like JOANN are out there — some with a similar business model, and others with a more specific focus — so you can find exactly what you need for just about any craft project you can think of. From large retailers and marketplaces to small businesses, check out the nine best JOANN alternatives ahead.
The Best Stores Like JOANN
Michaels
Michaels is perhaps the closest JOANN alternative — especially if you love this craft store for its floral department, art supplies, yarn stock, and home and holiday decor. The retailer also has an excellent framing department and a selection of craft organization solutions as well an extensive embroidery section with lots of different DMC threads (including some exclusive options).
If you love JOANN for its in-store fabric assortment, though, Michaels might not be your best bet. While you can shop for fabric online, most Michaels locations I’ve visited have a very limited (and, in some cases, non-existent) selection. But with JOANN gone, it’s possible that the craft retailer might expand their inventory in the future — fingers crossed!
Hobbii
JOANN’s fabric and yarn offerings are two big concerns in the craft community. Luckily a few good backups already exist — especially if you’re looking for cheap, high-quality yarn. Chief on that list? Hobbii.
This online retailer has tons of different fiber offerings at excellent prices. You can find everything from acrylic yarn and merino wool yarn to mohair yarn and cotton yarn. Hobbii also has great sales and pricing similar to wholesale models, where the more you buy, the better deal you get. The platform even carries lots of fiber art supplies and accessories, including crochet hooks, knitting needles, and other essentials.
Etsy
Etsy is a go-to marketplace for handmade items, but it’s also one of the best JOANN alternatives and craft supply resources — from fabric and yarn to notions. It’s also one of the best places to shop for sewing, crochet, and knitting patterns; cross stitch and needlepoint charts; and other DIY tutorials.
Blackbird Fabrics
Some good news: There are plenty of JOANN alternatives for fabric specifically, including some small businesses like Blackbird Fabrics. This online store is a favorite for people who love to sew. It features high-quality fabrics in classic solids and fun prints. Blackbird Fabrics also carries lots of sewing notions (including cute tags) and sewing patterns.
Hobby Lobby
As far as stores like JOANN are concerned, Hobby Lobby is right up there with Michaels. This retailer has everything you might be missing once JOANN closes, including some high-quality private-label yarns that are just as good as JOANN’s beloved Big Twist Yarn brand.
You’ll also find a large fabric section where you can shop by the yard, plus an impressive collection of arts and crafts supplies. Additionally, the retailer stocks some home and holiday decor. It also has a framing department and a small Cricut offering for people with Cricut machines.
Blick Art Materials
If you frequent JOANN for its paint supplies, Blick Art Materials is worth looking into. This chain specializes in all things art-related, including some more elevated fine art options that you can’t find at JOANN. Outside of specialty stores, Blick is also a great place to shop for pottery essentials, including pottery glazes and clay.
Yarnspirations
Yarnspirations is another yarn retailer with offerings similar to JOANN. It currently stocks some of the best yarn brands, including Bernat, Red Heart, Caron, Sugar‘n Cream, and Patons. It’s also a great place to buy craft kits (like this adorable Bernat Latch It rug kit), thread, and a variety of crafting tools you’ve definitely spotted at JOANN. You can browse and download Yarnspirations’ vast collection of free crochet and knitting patterns, too.
Fire Mountain Gems and Beads
When JOANN closes its doors, you can still find beads at stores like Hobby Lobby and Michaels. However, if you want something a little more specific, Fire Mountain Gems and Beads is one of the best places to browse for beads and jewelry supplies.
This online marketplace has everything you could ever need to make beaded creations. Plus, the site doubles as an excellent resource for learning how to get started with this hobby — including information about seed beads, metalworking, and wire working.
DMC
In terms of finding embroidery, cross stitch, and needlepoint must-haves, you still have plenty of choices beyond JOANN. Hobby Lobby and Michaels have decent in-store and online selections, and you can also find patterns and kits on Etsy. If you want to go right to the source, though, DMC is where it’s all at.
The DMC brand online store carries all kinds of needlework supplies, including thread, canvas, and even some yarn. It’s also one of the best places to shop for beginner-friendly craft kits. If you’re a little more experienced, don’t forget to browse the brand’s collection of free charts and patterns.
Other JOANN Alternatives
In addition to these craft stores, some more specific brands are also excellent resources in the absence of JOANN. For sewing, check out Brother, Singer, and JUKI for machines, equipment, and even some project inspiration. Brother also has its own creative hub called Artspira (similar to JOANN’s Creativebug), which features all sorts of project inspiration, including downloadable embroidery designs.
If you loved JOANN for its Cricut section, the brand itself has an online store where you can purchase machines, accessories, and materials, as well as a blog with tons of creative project ideas.
You can shop for crochet and knitting supplies as well as patterns from yarn brands like Lion Brand Yarn, Wool and the Gang, The Woobles, and Bernat. It’s also worth looking up local yarn shops to support small businesses that offer high-quality specialty supplies. My favorites include Ginger Twist Studio, De Afstap, This Is Knit, Button and Needlework Boutique, Knitty City, The Knitting Tree, and West Village Knit & Needle.
Walmart, Amazon, and Target are also good JOANN alternatives. Although they are larger big-box stores that don’t specialize in crafting, all three companies have an excellent range of supplies online. Target’s Mondo Llama brand is a great option if you love all of the JOANN kids’ craft kits, and some Walmart stores also sell fabric by the yard and are stocked with yarn.
