Name: Alison, Trevor & Theodore Location: Vancouver, BC Mount Pleasant Size: 600 square feet Years lived in: 6 years; Owned I stumbled upon Alison’s Instagram not so long ago and fell in love with her blog 600SQFTANDABABY. For the past 5 years, Alison and Trevor made it work in their small apartment, but when baby Theodore came along, it was time to re-evaluate their living situation.

Name: Rob Maddox and Karie Reinertson, owners of Shelter Collective Location: Asheville, North Carolina Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: 3 years; rented Rob and Karie have created a home that beautifully recounts their lives through displays of unique treasures and layers of textiles, many of which have been collected from family and friends.

Name: Maria Location: Seattle, WA We moved into our home in October and have been ‘DIYing’ and ‘Craigslisting’ ever since! We live in Seattle and have been delighted by the amount of mid century modern furniture and artifacts we have found. We’ve found (and bought!) all sorts of things – from an Eames leg splint, a Spacelander bicycle to a Bertoia bird chair – on Craigslist.

Name: Tina Scherzinger Location: San Diego, California I bought my 1920s spanish craftsman bungalow (1100 sq ft) last year and then spent six months renovating it completely and even changing the floorplan from a three (small) bedroom, one bath home into a spacious two bedroom, two bath home. I transformed the dirt front lawn and backyard into a beautiful succulent and desert garden.

Name: Maggie Dillon Location: Raleigh, North Carolina My boyfriend and I just moved in together in this wonderful 1930s house that he has lived in for the past three years as he went through Law School. To say it has changed a little since I have moved in might be a understatement. Although we have a pretty tight budget, I think we’ve been able to create a welcoming home that reflects who we are. It also helps that the house has killer bones (like 10 foot ceilings!

Name: Kathy McGee and Matt McGee, their two children, and two golden retrievers Location: Franklin, Tennessee Size: 3,900 square feet Years lived in: 8 1/2 years Kathy has been in love with design ever since she got to choose her bedroom’s paint color in the 7th grade. Surrounded by that lavender, she read magazines and dreamt of being a writer. Many years later, she started the blog My Interior Life. After that, her design business was the next step.

Name: Laura and James Location: Heritage Hill; Grand Rapids, Michigan Size: 920 square feet Years lived in: 3.5 years; owned Laura and James’ home is a study in scale, balance, repetition and continuity. Artwork is carefully staggered on the gallery wall across from the kitchen. Even though the size, color and subject matter of the artwork vary, the presentation is kept clean and unified with black, white, birch and silver frames.

Surprising uses of wallpaper and fabric — from the glamorous palm wallpaper in the kitchen to the African wax cloth curtains in the dining room to the vintage Moroccan wedding blanket fashioned into a headboard in the master bedroom — play a big role in creating this home’s unique visual texture. Name: Helen Edwards, Blogger, Stylist, Author & Wellbeing Coach Location: Rostrevor, South Australia Size: 1,884 square feet Years lived in: 16 years; Owned Helen is a fantastic force of creativity and happiness, and her cozy home is an extension of her bright and colorful character. Filled with things found, bought and gifted, it’s the layers and depth of time that make this house something of a warm hug hello.

Name: Eric Location: Los Angeles, CA Where do I even begin!? I once dreamed of living in a small flat, next to a hill with a giant tree outside front and the sidewalk, city streets below me. My home is the perfect example of putting that energy out into the universe and creating it. Gramercy Gardens is the name of my building that was constructed in the 1920’s. Its a four floor walk up, with accordion elevator doors and a New York style fire escape out front, with a brick edifice.

Name: Yasmin Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada My apartment is a 590 square foot attic suite in a Victorian Townhome. After living abroad I returned to Toronto for graduate studies, bringing with me a collection of textiles from my travels. Most of the textiles pictured are from Turkey and Estonia, my living room carpet is a 1930 Baltic design handwoven by a relative of mine. The art work scattered throughout are mostly gifts from friends and artists, I work for a contemporary art gallery.

Name: Judith Cossette and Benjamin Dupont Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada I’m a photographer from Montreal. My boyfriend Benjamin is an industrial designer. We’ve had this amazing 1100 square feet loft in Montreal for the past three years. We love the warm and cozy feel that the place offers. We wanted the first feeling that you have when you first walk in to be the feeling of comfort.

Name: Megan and Josh Miller Location: Nashville, Tennessee Size: 2,000 square feet Years lived in: 5 1/2 years Megan is a stay-at-home mom with two girls and a baby on the way. Stretching a dollar is sometimes a necessity, but it’s also fun. Scouring Craigslist, flea markets, discount stores, and garage sales are a way of life for her. In fact, she’s gotten so good at finding Craigslist deals she started Curating Craigslist to share her finds with people in the Nashville area.

Name: Tyler and Jack Location: Heritage Hill; Grand Rapids, Michigan Size: 1,000 square feet Years lived in: 2 years; Rented Tyler and Jack have the best-smelling home I’ve toured so far. As I entered their apartment, the scent of pine trees and an Up North campfire hit me. The incense and candle fragrances floated from room to room as dreamy, lounge music from Neon Indian and Bonobo spun on the record player. I began counting the number of iconic chairs in the apartment: fourteen.
