The color brown is experiencing an identity crisis; once a design darling in the mid-aughts, it started receiving a bad rap as more interior designers leaned into bold, colorful interiors. But when you think about it, brown is far from bland. When it’s paired thoughtfully, it can completely transform and ground any space.

Next to the right shade, brown feels warmer, vibrant, and way more interesting. “Brown works so well in interiors right now because it feels grounding, warm, and timeless,” says Erica Yaw, lead designer at Colorado-based Rumor Designs. “It connects us to nature, which makes spaces feel more relaxed and inviting.”

The key to creating unique, powerful interiors is to play with this hue’s many variations. That may include layering in more than just paint, including natural materials like wood — especially those with distinct patterns, like burl wood, explains Alex Bass, founder and CEO of fine art and interior design studio Salon 21

“These organic variations bring depth and visual interest to a space, making brown feel rich and dynamic rather than flat or dated,” she adds.

Texture is also crucial for designing brown interiors that feel especially interesting, advises Niki Cheng, cofounder of New York City’s 18th Street Design Collective. “Layering those variations is what gives a space character and soul — it’s never flat, always dimensional,” she says.

So yes, brown can stand on its own, but where it really shines is in combination. Ahead, you’ll find 20 interiors (including original Apartment Therapy house tours!) that prove brown is anything but basic. Each of these spaces highlights a different designer-approved brown color pairing to inspire your next project.

3 Designer Tips for Choosing Colors to Match Brown:

  • Lean on earthy pairings for calm: Taking a hint from nature, brown pairs well with other warm colors including olive green, terracotta, and ochre. It may also sit nicely next to softer cool tones that give off the same grounded vibe, depending on other rooms in your home.
  • Play with contrast for drama: Brown comes alive when set against high-contrast colors — think deep maroon, jet black, or even a brighter pop of lime green or cobalt blue. These bold mixes keep brown from reading flat and add sophistication without sacrificing warmth.
  • Mix textures, not just tones: One of brown’s strengths is how well it works in materials. Combine leather, velvet, wood, and bronze to create depth within the same palette. Layering different finishes and shades guarantees the look feels dimensional and full of character.

1. Brown and Mushroom

In this kitchen designed by Denver-based interior designer Peggy Haddad, the warm wood dining chairs pair perfectly with the mushroom cabinets.

“After so many years of gray — and then white — everything, people are ready for depth and dimension, and brown delivers both in spades,” Haddad says. “The contrast against the lighter mushroom cabinetry (painted in a near-match to Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter) keeps the brown from feeling too heavy or like a throwback to the all-brown kitchens of the past.”

2. Brown and Apple Green

Green and brown are a natural pairing, but this specific shade of candy-apple green really pops against the dark walnut dining chairs. “Brown and green are an instant nature-inspired combo,” Yaw explains. “The richness of the green highlights the earthy quality of brown and gives a grounded, organic feel.”

3. Brown and White

Sometimes the secret to making brown feel fresh hinges on what you put next to it. In this kitchen, interior designer Melissa Filter of Meadowlark Design+Build layered brown cabinetry with white details. “Brown brings warmth and depth, but the secret is contrast,” she says. “By layering in white counters, light floors, and natural light, the space feels fresh and bright.”

4. Brown and Terracotta

Brown and terracotta might just be the coziest color combo of all. In this bunkroom designed by Yaw, terracotta curtains wrap the walnut bed nook in warmth that almost feels bohemian. “The clay tones balance the richness of the brown with a playful, modern twist,” she adds.

5. Brown and Lime Green

In this Atlanta home, a quirky lime-green side table finds a home between two classic brown leather chairs, and the combo just works. The staying power of the leather makes the green feel even fresher, while the darker tones of the chairs help the color pop.

6. Brown, Ochre and Teal

The most timeless palettes are drawn directly from nature. Cheng used a beautiful ochre ottoman in this dark brown living room to create a moment of contrast. “Brown, teal, and ochre form a trio I return to often — not only for their beauty, but for the effortless balance they bring to a space,” she says. “Ochre completes the composition with a golden vibrancy, while teal introduces vitality and a quiet connection to the outdoors.”

7. Brown and Pink Clay

Limewash paint always brings coziness, but in this Ojai, California, home, it’s the clay-pink pigment that really steals the show. Set against brown accents, from the striped pillows to the leather chair, the palette feels soft and grounded, with your eye naturally moving around the room.

8. Brown, Blue and Gray

Sometimes, the best color stories come in threes. The palm-leaf wallpaper in this Los Angeles home ties copper-brown tones to a matching chair, while a splash of blue adds just the right amount of contrast. The effect is layered and far from one-note.

9. Brown and (More!) Brown

Think monochrome is boring? This London bedroom begs to differ. With brown on the ceiling, walls, floors, and accessories, the space feels rich and multidimensional thanks to the play of different finishes and textures.

10. Brown and Peach

Peach walls can skew overly sweet, but paired with brown furniture, the effect shifts. In this Montreal apartment, a brown dresser, plus dark baseboards and trim, add enough grounding to make the pinkish hue feel layered and grown-up.

11. Toffee Brown and Cobalt Blue

This lounge area, designed by Bass, is an excellent reminder that brown can feel playful, too. The soft toffee-colored chairs mixed with cobalt blue show how brown comes alive when set against something bold.

12. Brown, Olive Green and Red

Olive green and red don’t have to feel seasonal — this entry space (also designed by Bass) proves the pairing can read sophisticated, not kitschy. The flowers echo the rug, but it’s the magic between olive and brown that she leans on most.

“The richness of olive complements the warmth of brown, creating a grounded look that feels calm and cohesive,” Bass explains.

13. Brown and Light Pink

Another colorful pairing in this same Atlanta home: a blush-pink bathroom that glows against the brown wood window frame. Layered wood tones throughout keep the palette warm and dimensional, so the pink reads playful rather than too much.

14. Ochre Brown and Turquoise

Craving a brown that’s not too deep but not quite as light as beige? This renter shows off a beautiful color-drenched bedroom in an ochre brown shade that looks darling with the turquoise vanity.

15. Brown and Gray

Brown and gray aren’t the most obvious pairing, but this D.C. studio makes a strong case. The caramel bedspread sits in front of the brown zebra-print wallpaper, all against gray-painted walls — and somehow it just works.

16. Brown and Yellow

Another color-drenched bedroom to behold, this time in sandy brown walls. The sunny yellow duvet is the standout here, creating a sharp contrast that instantly brightens the calming palette.

17. Plum Brown and Orange

Painting the “fifth wall” (aka the ceiling) is trending, and this plum brown version in Virginia is a stunner. Paired with orange curtains and bedding, the combo feels high-energy and dramatic. It’s exactly the kind of contrast that makes a room memorable.

18. Espresso Brown and Turquoise

This Chicago rental proves that a deep, dark brown backdrop can make colors sing. Espresso-painted walls make the turquoise accents pop in a way that grabs your eye the second you walk in.

19. Brown and Lavender

In this Toronto apartment, brown goes all in: paneled walls, sofas, and accents. Then comes the unexpected twist — a lavender coffee table in the center of it all. The pairing is unusual, but the effect is stunning and a little whimsical.

20. Light Brown and Pale Blue Gray

The pale blue-gray shiplap walls in this Australian home set the stage for earthy accents. A light brown macrame wall hanging stands out beautifully against the cool backdrop, keeping the space soft but still full of depth.
