When Kate Hudson decided to remodel the kitchen in her childhood home, she intended to keep the original blue-and-white theme while giving it a fresh look. Rather than go the traditional route with her pop of color in the tiles or paint color, Hudson made her countertops the “something blue” her white kitchen needed. And the result is stunningly beautiful and so unique that you’ll see all future countertops as a blank canvas.

“I’m calling it my Blue Jean Baby,” Hudson said in an Instagram video, created in partnership with Café Appliances. “I decided to completely redo my kitchen, and it’s been a really emotional experience. This house has been so hard for me to change. It holds so many memories.”

Hudson said she was inspired by the blue-and-white tiles that were originally above the kitchen stove. “I kind of didn’t want to change it too much because it was so personal to me. So I did my version of my mom’s kitchen,” she tells fans in the video.

So Hudson went with a blue veined stone for her countertops and backsplash. It’s so unexpected and colorful, but because it’s natural stone and paired with classic white cabinets and appliances, the space still feels classic and timeless.

“In an overly neutral toned designer world, this is beautifully refreshing to see! Color sophistication,” one person commented on Hudson’s post. Another said, “Couldn’t possibly love the blue any more! Wow …fabulous makeover.”

“I feel like we went for cozy, classy, colorful, like your favorite pair of blue jeans,” Hudson said in the video. “I feel like we accomplished just that.”

Neutral countertops are nice, but, as Hudson proves, a splash of color can go a long way!
