I Think Pantone’s 2026 Color of the Year Might Be Its Most Controversial Yet
While most people might spend the first week of December decorating for the holidays, at Apartment Therapy, it’s already all about 2026. We’re talking all things trends this week (check out our State of Home Design report to see what’s in store!), from winning color combos to trending textiles. And we’re not the only ones.
Just this morning, Pantone unveiled their 2026 Color of the Year — and even we didn’t see this one coming! Introducing: PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer, the color you’re about to start seeing everywhere.
What Does PANTONE’s 11-4201 Cloud Dancer Look Like?
The newly crowned color of the year is a soft, wintry white. Pantone describes the shade as “a billowy, balanced white imbued with a feeling of serenity.” Now, some people say white isn’t actually technically a color, but rather a lack of color — though if you’ve ever had to pick a white paint, I think you might disagree. There are warm-toned whites, cool-toned whites, and the ever-elusive neutral shade … like Cloud Dancer.
The choice of a neutral white specifically was a very intentional one, of course; though quite different from last year’s shade, the light brown Mocha Mousse, it does deliver a similar soothing effect — and represents a desire for balance and peace. In a press release, Pantone expresses its hope that Cloud Dancer will “serve as a symbol of calming influence in a frenetic society rediscovering the value of measured consideration and quiet reflection.” It’s a true blank canvas for the new year.
Laurie Pressman, vice president of Pantone Color Institute, further explains: “We are living in a transitional time where people are seeking truth, possibility and a new way of [life]. PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer is an airy white hue that exemplifies the search for balance between our digital future and our primal need for human connection, a liminal space that is a launchpad for creative expression … opening the door to increased imagination and innovation.”
This year, Pantone is once again partnering with several brands to celebrate the 2026 Color of the Year, including a revival of last year’s collaboration with Joybird. This new collection features classic Joybird silhouettes in trending new chenille-blend fabrics, Soul and Karina, and, of course, in the Cloud Dancer colorway. This year, it is also partnering with smart home fragrance brand Pura on a scent inspired by the airy, tranquil hue.
This choice marks a first in the 27-year history of Pantone’s Color of the Year, with PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer becoming the first white shade to enter the ranks. A good neutral white will never go out of style, especially not when it comes to home decor. If you’re looking for a “blank slate” paint color in the new year, or the perfect timeless white couch, let Cloud Dancer be your go-to hue for 2026.
